Ebola kills 1,354 in Congo outbreak with no vaccine

An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed 1,354 people since mid-May, authorities say.

More than 3,000 cases have been confirmed.

The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment.

This is Congo’s 17th recorded Ebola outbreak. The virus causes severe fever and internal bleeding and spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids.

Congo’s deadliest previous outbreak killed nearly 2,300 people between 2018 and 2020.
