University professors reinstated after bribery charges dropped

Dec 3, 2024 - Six professors from "Aleksandër Xhuvani" University in Elbasan have been reinstated after a court dropped charges against them, following allegations of bribery.

The professors were initially arrested on suspicion of accepting bribes in exchange for passing grades. However, after months of legal proceedings, the Special Anti-Corruption Court ruled that the arrests were unlawful and lifted the suspension on their roles.

While the professors are now free to return to their duties, the case has shed light on a growing issue of corruption within the country’s educational system. Authorities claim the professors used their positions to influence both student admissions and grades, with students allegedly paying for better marks.

The case also involved a middleman, who is now in custody, and acted as a link between the professors and students. His wife, who was also implicated, remains suspended from her job.
