Muslim leaders condemn mosque unrest

Albania’s Muslim leaders have condemned unrest outside a major mosque after worshippers were injured during an opposition protest.

The Muslim Community of Albania said tear gas and petrol bombs were thrown near the Namazgja Mosque while Ramadan evening prayers were under way on Friday.

It said innocent worshippers were hurt and called on all sides to show restraint.

The group warned that its measured public stance should not be seen as tolerance of violations of believers’ rights.

The protest, organised by the opposition Democratic Party, lasted several hours and saw clashes with police in central Tirana. Authorities later arrested multiple demonstrators.
