Albanian prosecution offices handled more than 50,000 criminal cases in 2025

Albania’s prosecution offices handled more than 50,000 criminal proceedings in 2025, as their workload continued to rise.

Prosecutor General Olsian Çela told parliament’s law committee that prosecutors reviewed 66,397 case materials last year, up 8.5% from 2024.

The number of criminal proceedings reached 50,121, a rise of 5.3%. New cases accounted for 27,077 of them.

Çela said prosecutors also refused to open proceedings in 16,276 referrals and complaints, 20% more than a year earlier.

Tirana carried the largest share of the workload, with more than a third of all proceedings.

The national crime rate also rose, from 1,037 to 1,145 registered proceedings per 100,000 people.
