July 6, 2014 - Albania has recorded significant improvements in public safety and a positive shift in citizen perceptions during the first half of 2024, according to a recent survey conducted by the Agenda Institute. The findings indicate that this year has been the safest for Albanian citizens in the past decade.
The survey analyzed data on fatalities from crimes and road accidents, revealing that a total of 92 individuals lost their lives in the first six months of 2024. Of these, 18 fatalities were due to crimes, while 74 resulted from road accidents. This marks a notable decrease compared to the same period in 2023, with 17 fewer victims reported.
Citizens expressed strong belief in reduced crime rates in their communities, with 76.5% indicating confidence in the decline of criminal activities. This positive perception is supported by 70.5% of respondents praising law enforcement for their swift interventions in cases of theft, robbery, or other criminal incidents.
Furthermore, a significant majority of respondents, 83%, reported feeling safe while walking alone in their neighborhoods after dark. This sense of security correlates with the perceived effectiveness and visible presence of the police, acknowledged by 77.4% of respondents who noted a reassuring police presence in residential areas.
The survey also highlighted public commendation for the Albanian State Police, with 70.1% of respondents approving of their overall performance. Similarly, 70.2% expressed satisfaction with the police’s handling of challenges related to tourism.
Conducted electronically on June 1-2, 2024, with participation from approximately 2,000 respondents, the survey provides comprehensive insights into evolving public perceptions and safety dynamics across Albania.
