January 20, 2025 - In a press briefing today, Altin Dumani, head of Albania’s Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPAK), provided updates on his office’s ongoing efforts to tackle election frauds and its investigations into some of the country’s most prominent politicians.
Dumani confirmed that SPAK would soon release its long-awaited strategy for addressing election fraud, with the aim of ensuring Albania’s electoral system remains free of illegal influence.
Turning to the controversial Sky app, Dumani revealed that former MP Jurgis Çyrbja was among the individuals identified as users. “It’s not true that no politicians are involved. We have the evidence,” Dumani said, adding that Çyrbja is currently in custody. He reaffirmed SPAK’s commitment to pursuing criminal investigations at every level of politics, should the evidence support it.
Dumani remained tight-lipped when asked about the investigation into former Minister Arben Ahmetaj, stating he could not comment on ongoing inquiries.
On the subject of Erion Veliaj, the Mayor of Tirana, Dumani confirmed that preliminary checks have been carried out, but made it clear that the investigation was still in its early stages. “These are just initial steps to gather evidence,” he explained.
Addressing the recent appellate court decision regarding former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, Dumani said SPAK respects the court's ruling but will pursue an appeal if necessary. He also gave an update on the ongoing investigation into Ilir Meta, Albania’s former president, confirming that it is continuing.
“We respect the judiciary, but when we disagree, we have the right to appeal,” Dumani said. “The investigation into Ilir Meta is still ongoing, and SPAK’s requests have been upheld by the courts.”
