PM backs ex-health minister for Tirana mayor

TIRANA, Sep 24 (TemA) — Prime Minister Edi Rama endorsed former health minister Ogerta Manastirliu as the Socialist Party’s candidate for Tirana mayor, as the party prepares for a by-election in the capital.

The step follows a city-council vote on Tuesday to propose the dismissal of Mayor Erion Veliaj over prolonged absence. Veliaj has been in pre-trial detention since Feb. 10. A by-election would fill the post.

Rama met Tirana district MPs and cabinet ministers at party headquarters to set the campaign plan. He also met the deputy mayors, who are handling day-to-day business at City Hall.

Manastirliu, now a lawmaker, previously ran the health portfolio and led Albania’s COVID-19 response. Rama said she has full party backing and framed the race as a chance to restore clear leadership at the municipality.

No election date has been announced.
