Albanian parliament speaker Lindita Nikolla steps down due to health issues

Tirana, July 27, 2024 - Lindita Nikolla, the Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, has stepped down due to health reasons, ending her three-year tenure leading the legislative body.

In an emotional speech to Parliament, Ms. Nikolla shared that her decision was driven by personal health challenges. "This decision is a result of a personal health situation," she said.

Reflecting on her time in office, Mrs. Nikolla noted, "Beyond the acts of theatrical politics here in this hall, where I have faced some undeserved verbal attacks, I am left with the good feeling of respect that you all have shown me." She asked her colleagues not to politicize her resignation, calling it "undesired but unavoidable."

Ms. Nikolla will now focus on spending more time with her family and serving her constituents as a deputy.

A key figure in the Socialist Party, Ms. Nikolla has been involved in the party's leadership for 17 years. Her career began as a teacher and principal in high schools before she became the head of a municipal unit in Tirana. Elected to Parliament for three terms, she also served as Minister of Education for seven years before becoming Speaker in September 2021.
