Germany thrash Curacao in World Cup opener

Germany began their World Cup campaign with a 7-1 win over Curacao in Houston.

Kai Havertz scored twice, with Felix Nmecha, Nico Schlotterbeck, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Denis Undav also on target.

Curacao, the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup, were heavy underdogs and could not live with Germany’s pace and depth.

The win gives Germany a strong start before their second group game against Ivory Coast in Toronto on 20 June.

The squad will return to their base in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, before preparations resume on Tuesday.
