North Macedonia: Court brings back Yugoslav-era street names in Tetovo

A court in North Macedonia has removed Albanian street names in Tetovo and restored names from the Yugoslav era.

The ruling overturns a 2007 decision that renamed streets and a square after Albanian historical figures and events.

Names linked to Marshal Tito, Lenin and the former Yugoslav army will return.

The court said the 2007 changes did not follow the law.

Albanian parties criticised the ruling, calling it a step back for the country’s Albanian minority.

Tetovo officials said they will start a new legal process to keep Albanian-language street names.
