Electric railway ready by 2027

Albania has secured major new European funding to launch the country's first electric railway line by the end of 2027.

The upgraded transport network will directly connect central Tirana with the port of Durres and the main international airport.

Infrastructure Minister Enea Karakaci addressed the assembly, confirming that physical track construction is already finished while electronic signaling is nearly complete.

Lawmakers later voted in favour of the international banking agreement to finance overhead power cables and purchase fully electric passenger trains.

Authorities are fast-tracking the railway project to modernize national transit and align public infrastructure with strict European Union standards.
