Cigarette prices rise

Cigarette prices are rising in Albania after a higher excise tax took effect this month.

The tax on cigarettes increased from 7,500 to 7,750 lek per 1,000 cigarettes, pushing up the price of a standard pack. Excise duties were also raised on e-cigarettes and vape liquids, bringing them under tighter taxation for the first time.

The government says the increase is meant to boost state revenue and discourage smoking on public health grounds.

Demand, however, remains strong. Tobacco imports hit a record 3,150 tonnes, according to official data. Authorities expect the tax changes to generate about 1 billion lek in additional revenue this year, with further gradual price rises planned.
