TIRANA, Aug 25 (TemA) – Albania will enforce a new trademark law on Tuesday aimed at cracking down on counterfeit luxury goods that have flooded its market for years.
The legislation bars the import and export of products infringing intellectual property rights, with customs given authority to seize fake Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Dior items before they reach consumers.
Travelers are also affected: branded imitations bought abroad will be confiscated at border points. Brand owners will gain the right to sue for damages and demand official investigations, with penalties outlined under Article 87.
In 2024 alone, Albanian customs blocked more than 40,000 counterfeit items, mostly clothing, footwear and cosmetics. Authorities say the real figure is far higher, with fakes harming legitimate businesses and exposing consumers to unsafe materials.
Officials argue the measure marks a decisive blow against counterfeit traders, though strict enforcement by customs and police will be key to curbing smuggling routes.
