One year since the death of Ismail Kadare

One year has passed since the death of Ismail Kadare, Albania’s most prominent literary figure, whose work elevated Albanian literature to global recognition.

Kadare died at age 88 on July 1, 2024. Born in Gjirokastër in 1936, he launched his literary career with poetry in the 1950s and gained international acclaim with his 1963 novel The General of the Dead Army.

A graduate of the University of Tirana and a former student at the Maxim Gorky Institute in Moscow, Kadare’s fiction bridged Albanian history with universal themes. Notable works include The Castle (1970), Chronicle in Stone (1970), The Palace of Dreams (1981), and The Wedding Procession Turned to Ice, inspired by Kosovo's 1981 protests.

Kadare went into self-exile in France in 1990 during Albania’s political transition and returned after the fall of communism. He was a lifelong associate member of the French Academy of Moral and Political Sciences and received numerous honors, including the Legion of Honour (France), the Prince of Asturias Award (Spain), and a nomination for the Man Booker International Prize.

His works have been translated into 45 languages, placing him among the world’s most recognized authors, alongside Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Milan Kundera.
