VENICE, Sept 7 (TemA) — Jim Jarmusch won the Golden Lion for “Father Mother Sister Brother,” a three-part drama set in New Jersey, Dublin and Paris about strained ties between parents and adult children.
The Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize went to Kaouther Ben Hania’s “The Voice of Hind Rajab,” a Gaza-set account of a five-year-old trapped in a burning car. Benny Safdie took the Silver Lion for Best Director for “The Smashing Machine,” starring Dwayne Johnson as MMA pioneer Mark Kerr.
Acting honors went to China’s Xin Zhilei, who won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for “The Sun Rises on Us All,” and Italy’s Toni Servillo, who won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for Paolo Sorrentino’s “La grazia.”
Gianfranco Rosi earned the Special Jury Prize for the documentary “Below the Clouds” (“Sotto le nuvole”). Best Screenplay went to Valérie Donzelli and Gilles Marchand for “À pied d’œuvre” (“At Work”). The Marcello Mastroianni Award for best young performer went to Luna Wedler for Ildikó Enyedi’s “Silent Friend.”
“Thank you for valuing our quiet film,” Jarmusch said. Ben Hania said cinema cannot bring Hind back, “but it can carry her voice across borders.”
