Gjirokastra marks 20 years as UNESCO World Heritage site

Albania’s historic city of Gjirokastra is celebrating 20 years since its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized globally for its unique architecture and cultural heritage.

Prime Minister Edi Rama marked the anniversary with a message on social media, calling the city “a timeless treasure of the soul.” He shared a video tribute highlighting Gjirokastra’s enduring charm.

The city’s hilltop fortress—one of the largest in the Balkans—remains a major draw for visitors, offering sweeping views and a rich narrative of regional history. Gjirokastra was added to the UNESCO list on July 15, 2005.
