Eurovision faces one of the biggest political tests in its history as national broadcasters meet on Friday to decide whether Israel will be allowed to compete in the 2026 contest. Several countries have warned they may withdraw if Israel is not suspended over its war in Gaza.
The meeting at the headquarters of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in Geneva will examine new rules designed to limit state-backed campaigning after allegations that Israel excessively promoted its 2025 entry. Israel, which finished second this year, has rejected accusations of unfair influence.
Broadcasters from Slovenia, Ireland, Spain and the Netherlands have threatened to boycott next year’s contest in Austria unless Israel is excluded. Critics cite the soaring Palestinian death toll in Gaza, while Israel says it faces a global campaign of delegitimisation.
If members are not satisfied that the new rules preserve the contest’s political neutrality, they will vote directly on Israel’s participation, the EBU said.
Germany’s culture minister warned Berlin should pull out if Israel is banned, saying “there must be no Eurovision without Israel.” Austria’s ORF also supports Israel’s participation.
Israel’s broadcaster KAN says it is preparing for next year’s competition and will respond formally if a vote on exclusion is held.
