Ancient temple ruins uncovered in Albania’s Zagori

Archaeologists in southern Albania have discovered ruins dating back to the 4th–5th centuries BCE during early work on a road expansion project near the village of Sheper in the Zagori region.

Experts believe the remains may belong to an ancient temple, and plan to launch a full archaeological expedition to uncover more about its style, structure, and history.

“This could reveal a lot about the architecture and religious life of the time,” said Mariglen Meshini, director of the Archaeological Service at Albania’s National Institute of Cultural Heritage.

Alongside the excavation, researchers will also survey the wider area for signs of lost settlements, guided by local toponyms and terrain.

Authorities say the site will be documented and preserved under cultural heritage standards, in cooperation with local experts and institutions.
