Former Kosovo MPs claim €153,000 a month after short parliament

Former MPs in Kosovo are claiming more than €153,000 a month from taxpayers after a parliament that lasted less than three months.

Eighty of the 120 former lawmakers applied for a transition salary in May, worth €1,914 a month each, according to parliament data.

The payment is legal and can last for up to a year after an MP leaves office, unless they take another paid job or start receiving a pension.

One former MP from the last parliament could receive about €23,000 over 12 months.

Critics say the scheme is hard to justify while Kosovo faces rising food prices, unemployment and low wages.

They want the law changed so payments last for less time or match the length of the parliament that actually served.
