Tirana, July 30, 2024 - Elisa Spiropali has been elected as the new Speaker of the Albanian Parliament, securing 75 votes in her favor. This marks a significant shift in Albania’s political scene as she steps into the role previously held by Lindita Nikolla.
The session to vote in Spiropali and the new ministers for the Rama government was fraught with tension. Opposition deputies blocked the podium, creating obstacles for a traditional secret vote. In response, the socialists arranged for an electronic secret ballot to sidestep the disruption.
Things grew more heated after the vote when some deputies threw water and paper at Prime Minister Edi Rama. Despite the charged atmosphere, the new ministers were confirmed earlier in the day.
In her first address as Speaker, Spiropali spoke with a mix of humility and determination. "Dear colleagues, I hope you’ll understand this speech," she began. "Gratitude in politics can sometimes feel like the clinking of a fake crystal glass—outdated and hollow. But for me, it’s a reminder to push myself further."
Spiropali expressed heartfelt appreciation for her election and acknowledged the weight of her new role. "I’m deeply moved by the trust you’ve placed in me," she said. "What succeeds is yours, and what fails is a collective responsibility."
She also paid tribute to her predecessor, Lindita Nikolla. "You led this Parliament with great dedication and patience," Spiropali noted. "I aim to mirror your commitment and hope to fall short only in patience."
The new Speaker also reassured her colleagues that she would be a supportive presence rather than a confrontational force. "If there’s ever a need for me to step in as a party member, I’ll do so as an integral part of the team," she promised.
