September 16, 2024 — In a remarkable effort to preserve the Albanian language and culture, Montenegro has launched its first-ever Albanian audio library. The project offers audiobooks in the Albanian language, opening a new chapter for the Albanian community in the country, particularly benefiting those with visual impairments.
The initiative, called "Albanian Audio Works," is spearheaded by author Luljeta Avdiu Cura. Focusing initially on the works of Albanian writers from Montenegro, the project aims to expand, incorporating voices from across the region. Its core mission: to safeguard Albanian traditions and inspire younger generations to connect with their cultural roots.
"We live in a time where the younger generation is losing interest in traditional reading. By creating an audio library, we offer them a new way to engage with our rich literature and history," Cura said. "This project isn't just about books—it's about identity."
The significance of this initiative extends beyond Montenegro’s borders. It is equally aimed at the Albanian diaspora, particularly families raising children abroad who want to keep the connection to their language and heritage alive. Cura hopes the project will serve as a cultural bridge, keeping the Albanian language vibrant for future generations.
"This project will grow over time, and I am confident it will gain ongoing support from institutions like the Montenegro Minority Fund, which understand the importance of protecting our linguistic heritage," she added.
For many, the audio library offers a modern twist on traditional storytelling. It provides a convenient way for people to engage with literature while preserving the cultural fabric of the Albanian community. Audiobooks are seen as a powerful tool for those who may struggle with reading or prefer to absorb knowledge through listening.
As Albania’s cultural footprint continues to evolve, projects like this demonstrate how technology can play a vital role in keeping heritage alive in a fast-changing world.
