Wildfires rage across Los Angeles, over 7,500 firefighters battle devastating

January 9, 2025 – Six large wildfires have torn through Los Angeles and Ventura County, triggering urgent evacuations and leaving destruction in their wake. Over 137,000 people have fled their homes as powerful blazes continue to spread across the region.

More than 7,500 firefighters are working tirelessly to combat the flames, with federal and local agencies joining forces to contain the disaster. California Governor Gavin Newsom has called for immediate evacuations, urging residents to leave before the situation worsens.

The latest fire, burning through Hollywood Hills, has forced many residents—including high-profile celebrities—into evacuation. Among the destroyed homes are those of actors Leighton Meester and Adam Brody.

Authorities have confirmed at least five fatalities, with officials fearing the death toll could rise. The most severe damage is in Pacific Palisades, where hundreds of thousands of acres have been scorched. Firefighters are battling not only the flames but also a critical water shortage, complicating efforts to control the blazes.

In response to the crisis, President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency for California, ensuring that federal resources can assist with firefighting efforts. "We are ready to do whatever it takes to control these fires and help rebuild," Biden stated, acknowledging the long recovery ahead.

Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump has heavily criticized Governor Newsom, blaming him for the disaster and calling for his resignation. In a post on social media, Trump labelled the fires "apocalyptic," while Newsom fired back, accusing Trump of politicising the tragedy.

The fires have already caused an estimated $57 billion in damage, with further economic losses expected as the crisis unfolds.
