Military C-17 planes began deporting detained migrants from the United States on Friday under President Donald Trump’s orders, marking a rare use of military resources for immigration enforcement. The Pentagon is preparing to send additional troops to the southern border, including the elite 82nd Airborne Division.
Two U.S. military planes, each carrying 80 migrants, departed for Guatemala, according to an official. The Pentagon aims to deport over 5,000 migrants held in Texas and California detention centers.
President Trump declared illegal immigration a national emergency on his first day in office, authorizing the military to assist with border security. His executive order directed the Pentagon to provide as many troops as necessary to secure “complete operational control” of the southern border.
Meanwhile, immigration agents raided workplaces in Newark, New Jersey, detaining undocumented migrants and even U.S. citizens. Newark’s mayor, Ras Baraka, condemned the raid, accusing agents of violating residents' constitutional rights. (TemA)
