Jan 1, 2025 - At least 10 people have died, and 30 others are injured after a truck drove into a crowd celebrating New Year’s in New Orleans early Wednesday, officials have confirmed.
The collision occurred at the busy Canal and Bourbon Streets intersection, a hotspot in the city’s historic French Quarter. In a statement, New Orleans officials described the crash as a “tragic incident” involving a vehicle that struck a large group of people.
Police launch investigation
The New Orleans Police Department said victims were found at multiple locations, including Bourbon and Iberville Streets. Early reports suggest the vehicle may have deliberately targeted the crowd, but investigators are working to establish whether the act was intentional or accidental.
Police had anticipated large crowds as locals and tourists gathered to welcome the New Year. Additional officers were on patrol, with 300 reinforcements deployed to maintain safety in the area.
Celebrations turn to mourning
Bourbon Street, renowned for its vibrant nightlife and festive atmosphere, was packed with revellers when the crash occurred. A local favourite for bars, restaurants, and live music, the area had been brimming with energy as the city prepared to celebrate 2025.
