December 1, 2024, Tbilisi – Over 100 people have been arrested in Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, following violent clashes between police and protesters. The unrest is escalating after the government suspended talks with the European Union on joining the bloc.
Thousands have taken to the streets in recent days, demanding the government reverse its decision. The protests come ahead of Georgia’s December 14 presidential elections, with former Manchester City footballer Mikael Kavelashvili named as the official candidate by the ruling "Georgian Dream" party.
Kavelashvili, 53, who once was part of the ruling party, broke away in 2016 to form a new group, "People’s Power." However, he has since allied with his former party, led by oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili, known for his pro-Russian stance. Another key figure in his coalition is Kakha Kaladze, a former Milan player now serving as the mayor of Tbilisi.
As protests grew more violent late Friday, President Salome Zourabichvili urged police to show restraint. Despite her plea, 107 more arrests were made overnight, with police using water cannons, pepper spray, and reportedly brutal force on demonstrators, including an AP journalist.
“We will not accept a Russianized Georgia or a country stripped of its constitution,” said President Zourabichvili, praising the protesters' fight for democracy.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed the arrests, and tensions remain high as the country heads into a crucial election period.
