Russia's Lavrov issues stark warning amid Ukraine conflict

May 13, 2024 — Russia’s acting Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, issued a stark warning to the West regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In a parliamentary hearing, Lavrov stated, “If the West wants to fight for Ukraine on the battlefield, it will be on the battlefield.” His words come amidst heightened tensions and military developments in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

The statement follows the Ukrainian military’s admission that Russian forces are making progress in their offensive. Lavrov’s assertion underscores Russia’s readiness for a direct confrontation, even as French President Emmanuel Macron refused to rule out the possibility of Western troops being deployed to Ukraine.

President Vladimir Putin has previously warned that such a scenario could lead to World War Three. The Kremlin has consistently opposed NATO troops entering Ukraine, deeming it extremely dangerous.

Furthermore, Lavrov criticized the upcoming peace talks on Ukraine scheduled to take place in Switzerland next month. Russia’s exclusion from these talks, he argued, amounts to an ultimatum. He likened the situation to “a reprimand for a schoolchild” whose fate is decided by teachers while they are absent from the room. Lavrov firmly rejected this approach, stating, “You can’t talk to anyone like that, especially to us.”
