A Jeju Air flight from Bangkok veered off the runway and struck a wall during landing at Muan International Airport. Rescue efforts are ongoing.

Muan, South Korea — At least 151 people have died after a Jeju Air plane carrying 181 passengers crashed during a landing attempt at South Korea’s Muan International Airport. The flight, returning from Bangkok, Thailand, veered off the runway and collided with a wall shortly after 9:00 a.m. local time.

Emergency services are continuing to search the wreckage, with two crew members found alive so far. Families of passengers have gathered at the airport, awaiting updates as authorities work to identify victims.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the aircraft may have been struck by birds, potentially causing the loss of control. Aviation experts and officials are examining all possibilities as part of an ongoing probe.

Muan International Airport has been temporarily closed, with flights diverted to other airports in the region. Jeju Air expressed its condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and extend our heartfelt sympathies to the victims and their families. We are cooperating fully with the investigation.”

The disaster has prompted fresh scrutiny of aviation safety measures, particularly those aimed at preventing incidents during landing and takeoff—the most vulnerable phases of flight. Bird strikes, though rare, have been known to cause significant issues for aircraft.
