A tragic attack at a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg has left 2 people dead and at least 80 injured, many in critical condition.
Authorities have declared the incident, which occurred on Friday evening, an act of terrorism. Witnesses described how a black BMW ploughed into a crowd gathered in the square in front of the town hall at 7:04 PM local time.
The driver was arrested at the scene, but police have not yet released details about his identity or possible motives. The area remains sealed off as investigators and emergency services work through the night.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz offered his condolences shortly after the attack. Writing on social media platform X, he said:
“My condolences to the victims’ families and wishes for a swift recovery to the injured. We stand by the people of Magdeburg during this dark hour. I also extend my gratitude to the emergency services for their tireless efforts.”
Rescue teams set up emergency tents in the market to provide immediate medical assistance. The once-festive area, illuminated by Christmas lights, now stands surrounded by police and rescue personnel, as the community grapples with the devastating loss.
This latest incident has reignited concerns about security at public gatherings across Europe, especially during the festive season. Germany has experienced similar attacks in the past, most notably the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack, which killed 12 people and injured dozens.
Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, is known for its rich history and picturesque Christmas markets, which attract visitors from across the country.
