Ireland, Norway, and Spain recognize Palestine as independent state

May 22, 2024 — In a significant diplomatic move, Norway officially recognized Palestine as a separate state. Following suit, Ireland and Spain are also expected to announce their recognition of Palestine. This decision has prompted Israel to recall its ambassadors from these European nations.

Speaking on Wednesday, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris stated, “Today Ireland, Norway, and Spain are announcing that we recognize the state of Palestine. Each of us will undertake whatever national steps are necessary to give effect to that decision.” The Irish government argues that this recognition supports a two-state solution, which is essential for lasting peace in the region.

Shortly after Mr. Harris’ statement in Dublin, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez confirmed that Spain will recognize Palestine as a state starting from May 28. However, Israel’s foreign ministry has warned against this move, expressing concerns about potential terrorism and instability in the region.
