Greenland 'not for sale,' Danish PM tells Trump Jr during island visit

January 8, 2025 – Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has made it clear that Greenland is “not for sale” after renewed interest from the United States.

Her comments came as Donald Trump Jr, the eldest son of U.S. President Donald Trump, visited the Arctic territory, which remains an autonomous part of Denmark.

“Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” Frederiksen told Danish broadcaster TV2, backing Greenland’s own Prime Minister Múte Egede, who has repeatedly dismissed any suggestion of selling the island. “The U.S. is our closest ally, but Greenland is not and will never be for sale,” she added.

Fresh tensions over Greenland
President Trump sparked fresh controversy last month by reviving his interest in taking control of Greenland, calling it a “strategic priority” for the U.S. This isn’t the first time the idea has caused friction; back in 2019, Trump canceled a state visit to Denmark after officials rejected his earlier proposal to buy the island.

Greenland, the world’s largest island, has significant geopolitical value due to its natural resources and strategic location in the Arctic. It’s also at the forefront of global climate change, with melting ice caps opening up new shipping routes and access to minerals.
