Dec 16, 2024 - The EU has introduced new sanctions against Russia, aiming to weaken its ability to continue the war in Ukraine. This 15th package targets 54 people and 30 organisations accused of threatening Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence.
The sanctions include tankers from Vladimir Putin’s “shadow fleet” — ships that avoid oil price limits or support Russia’s energy sector. A total of 52 vessels are listed, some linked to stolen Ukrainian grain and the transport of military supplies.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the sanctions show the bloc’s unity and determination to help Ukraine. “Our top priority is to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position to win,” she said.
The measures also focus on Russian defence companies and shipping firms that earn money for the Kremlin by exporting crude oil. Senior energy managers and military officials involved in attacks on civilians, including the bombing of a children’s hospital in Kyiv, are also sanctioned.
This latest action aims to reduce Moscow’s income and disrupt the supply chains supporting its war effort, which has caused widespread suffering in Ukraine.
