December 20, 2024 – The European Union has pledged €30 billion in new aid for Ukraine in 2025, aimed at supporting the country’s defense and rebuilding efforts as it faces ongoing Russian attacks. European Council President Antonio Costa made the announcement during a press conference in Brussels.
Costa highlighted the EU's commitment to helping Ukraine, saying, “Now is the time to strengthen Ukraine in all situations.” He added that the EU will continue to provide financial support for as long as necessary. In addition to the new aid package, the EU will also impose new sanctions on Russia.
Zelensky calls for more help from the US
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who met with EU leaders in Brussels, stated that European security support alone would not be enough to protect Ukraine. He stressed the need for continued help from the United States, particularly in military and defense assistance. “European support is important, but we also need US help to protect our country,” Zelensky said.
Scholz discusses European security with Trump
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also held a phone call with US President-elect Donald Trump to discuss security in Europe. They agreed that the war in Ukraine has gone on for too long and that action must be taken to bring peace. Scholz reaffirmed that Germany will continue to support Ukraine against Russia’s aggression.
Both leaders agreed on the need for a fair and lasting peace to end the conflict.
EU leaders stress unity on Ukraine’s future
At the EU summit, leaders discussed the future of Ukraine and emphasized the importance of staying united in supporting the country. EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, warned that any decisions made about Ukraine’s future should include its input.
The EU also plans to continue applying pressure on Russia through sanctions while pushing for peace talks to end the war.
