December 9, 2024 - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has arrived in Moscow with his family, where they have been granted political asylum, Russian media reported on Sunday. The move follows reports of a rapid shift in Syria’s power structure, with rebel forces taking control after more than 50 years of Assad family rule.
The Kremlin confirmed the development, with an unnamed official telling Interfax news agency, “President Assad and his family have been offered asylum on humanitarian grounds. Russia is committed to ensuring stability in the region during this critical time.”

Moscow has also engaged with Syrian opposition leaders, who have guaranteed the safety of Russian military and diplomatic personnel. Kremlin insiders expressed hope for continued dialogue to avoid further destabilisation.
Biden responds to Assad’s exile
In Washington, President Joe Biden reacted to the news, calling Assad’s asylum a significant moment for Syria. Speaking from the White House, Biden stated, “We do not yet know Assad’s exact location, but reports suggest he is in Moscow. He must be held accountable for his actions against the Syrian people.”
Biden said that Syria’s political landscape has shifted dramatically. “For the first time in years, Syria’s future is no longer controlled by Assad’s allies—Russia, Iran, or Hezbollah. Their support has crumbled, leaving space for new possibilities,” he said.
The U.S. military conducted over 10 airstrikes in Syria on Sunday, targeting key Islamic State positions. Biden described the strikes as part of a broader effort to stabilise the region and prevent extremist groups from exploiting the power vacuum.
