UNESCO warns Ohrid’s heritage is at risk

December 14, 2024 – UNESCO has raised a third warning about the worsening situation in the Ohrid region, which is shared by North Macedonia and Albania. The organisation is concerned about illegal construction, urban expansion, and poor planning, urging both countries to act quickly to protect the area’s natural and cultural heritage.

The latest UNESCO report stresses that North Macedonia needs to take immediate steps to preserve the region. Without action, Ohrid could lose its exceptional value and may be added to the World Heritage in Danger list.

Environmental groups have reported pollution in Lake Ohrid, with waste from septic tanks, hotels, restaurants, and other developments contaminating the water. Many of these properties aren’t connected to sewage systems, making the problem worse. UNESCO warns that these issues, combined with poor urban planning, threaten Ohrid’s status as a World Heritage site.

The organisation is calling for a review of urban plans for Ohrid and Struga, an end to construction in the Studenčište Wetlands, and stronger enforcement to stop illegal buildings that damage the region’s unique character.

Despite these warnings, local activists say the government has not followed through on any of the 15 recommendations UNESCO made last year. In fact, new illegal buildings continue to appear, making the situation worse.

Both North Macedonia and Albania are responsible for protecting Ohrid. UNESCO is urging both countries to work together more closely to address the environmental impact of development in the area.

By February 2025, the two countries must submit a joint report on the steps they’ve taken to protect Ohrid. If no significant progress is made, the region could be at risk of losing its World Heritage status.

Ohrid, known for its rich history and natural beauty, now faces a critical moment in its preservation. The world’s attention is on the region, with hopes that it will be saved for future generations.
