Teen e-cigarette use soars, experts warn of serious health risks

January 19, 2025 – The use of e-cigarettes has exploded among teenagers, with experts raising alarms about the serious health risks that could hit later in life.

Originally promoted as a safer alternative to smoking, vapes are now being linked to addiction and other health problems. "E-cigarettes were meant to help people quit smoking, but they still contain nicotine, which can cause addiction," said Dr. Amarda Gashi, a toxicologist. "Over time, they can harm your lungs, heart, and immune system."

But the risks don’t stop there. The flavors used in e-cigarettes can also be dangerous. "When inhaled, the chemicals in the flavors can spread through your body, causing serious damage," Dr. Gashi warned.

Doctors are urging teens to think twice before vaping. "They need to be informed," Dr. Gashi said. "Talk to your parents and doctors. Just because something is new doesn’t mean it’s safe."

Recent studies show that more than 30% of boys in high school and 15% of 15-year-old girls are regular e-cigarette users, highlighting the growing trend and the potential long-term dangers for young people.
