January 22, 2025 - A new survey has revealed that a shocking 40% of Albanian farmers are using antibiotics on their animals, sparking fears over rising drug resistance.
The survey, which covered 525 farms and included 29 vets, shows large farms are the worst offenders, with more than half of sheep, goat, and dairy farmers turning to antibiotics to treat their livestock.
While antibiotics are essential to keep animals healthy, experts warn that overuse could lead to dangerous superbugs that threaten both animal and human health.
In Europe, regulations have slashed antibiotic use in livestock by 50% in the last decade. But in Albania, many farmers still rely on antibiotics – despite lacking proper training in animal health.
While most vets are keeping records, half of farmers are not. And some farmers are even giving their animals smaller doses than recommended, raising even more concerns about resistance.
Around 67% of farmers always get antibiotics with a prescription, but with the growing concern over their effectiveness, experts are warning that the clock is ticking.
