TIRANA, Dec 19, 2024 – The Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) of Albania marked its fifth anniversary on Tuesday, highlighting both its achievements and the challenges it has faced in fighting corruption and organized crime.
Altin Dumani, the head of SPAK, stressed that justice must be fair to everyone, saying, “Justice knows no sides, no untouchables.” He emphasized that SPAK's goal is to ensure that the law applies to all, regardless of their position or power.
SPAK, created in 2019 as part of Albania’s judicial reform, has faced criticism, especially after the arrest of opposition leaders Sali Berisha and Ilir Meta. Both have accused SPAK of political bias. Dumani addressed these criticisms, acknowledging the threats and efforts to undermine SPAK’s work. However, he assured that the institution remains strong and focused on its mission.
“Every day, we remind ourselves that our mission is not finished with the next case. SPAK is stronger because it is independent,” Dumani said. He highlighted that accountability and integrity are key to building a fair society.
Over the last five years, SPAK has made significant progress in tackling corruption and organized crime, though Dumani said there is always room for improvement. He also stressed that SPAK will continue to work towards a stronger justice system, providing hope for Albania's younger generation.
