Seven arrested in Albania after violent protest clashes with police

Tirana, December 24, 2024 - Seven protesters were arrested in Albania’s capital, Tirana, after violent clashes with police during an opposition-led protest on Monday. The demonstration blocked key roads and caused significant traffic disruptions.

Several others have been charged but remain free, including 40 opposition representatives from the Democratic Party, Republican Party, and the Freedom Party.

The protest lasted from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and saw direct confrontations with law enforcement. Opposition leaders accused the government of undermining democracy, while police worked to clear the roads and restore order.

Sali Berisha, leader of the Democratic Party, joined the protest for the first time since his house arrest, calling for civil disobedience against what he labelled an unconstitutional government.

Police response

The Tirana Regional Police Directorate confirmed the arrests and announced that 21 additional individuals have been charged, facing accusations of participating in an illegal gathering and obstructing public order. Among those charged are several serving MPs in Albania’s parliament.

The police have forwarded the case to the Tirana Prosecutor’s Office for further investigation.

Opposition leaders had urged demonstrators to block roads, escalating tensions with the government.
