Prime Minister Edi Rama unveils crucial step in protecting Vjosa River

May 20, 2024 - In a message posted today on Facebook, Prime Minister Edi Rama announced a significant advancement in efforts to safeguard the Vjosa River.

Rama declared the completion of the Management Plan for the National Park, which encompasses the Vjosa River, and it is now open for public consultation. This development represents a crucial moment in the conservation of Europe's last wild river.

Emphasizing the vital role of local communities, the Prime Minister urged residents in Fier, Vlorë, and Gjirokastër to actively participate in the forthcoming public hearings scheduled for May 22nd and 23rd.

Rama reiterated the exceptional ecological importance of the Vjosa River, spanning 480 kilometers and covering 12,000 hectares. He clarified any misconceptions regarding the river's protection status, asserting that it holds dual protection as part of both the Vjosa River National Park and the Protected Landscape of Pishë Poro-Nartë.

The comprehensive plan aims to ensure the sustainable management and preservation of this natural gem, benefiting both local communities and future generations.
