Ministry of Defence calls for preparedness as heavy rainfall and snowstorms approach Albania

Dec 22, 2024 - The Ministry of Defence has urged local and central government to take necessary precautions as Albania braces for severe weather conditions over the coming days. The warning comes as forecasts predict heavy rainfall, potential flooding, and snowstorms in parts of the country.

In a statement issued today, the Ministry, through the National Civil Protection Agency, called for heightened readiness in all regions to avoid flooding and ensure quick responses to emergencies. Local officials have been instructed to monitor conditions closely and act swiftly in case of an emergency.

According to the Military Meteorological Service and the Institute of Geosciences, the second half of today will see light rainfall across Albania. However, the weather is expected to intensify on December 23, with heavy to very heavy rainfall predicted for the regions of Vlorë, Gjirokastër, Shkodër, Kukës, and Dibër. Other parts of the country will experience moderate to intense rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms.

At higher altitudes, particularly in the North, East, and Southeast, snowfall is expected, which could lead to freezing temperatures and difficult transport conditions.

The Ministry of Defence stressed the importance of cooperation and rapid action to minimize the impact of the weather and ensure the safety of citizens. Authorities are advised to remain vigilant as extreme weather conditions are expected to persist.
