Jan 17, 2025 - Illegal migrant crossings through the Balkans dropped by 78% in 2024, according to EU border agency FRONTEX.
Around 21,000 migrants, mostly from Syria, Turkey, and Afghanistan, were stopped on the "Balkan route," which passes through Albania and neighboring countries.
FRONTEX said better cooperation between the EU and its partners helped cut illegal border crossings by 38% compared to last year.
In total, about 239,000 illegal entries into Europe were recorded in 2024, the lowest number since 2021, when COVID restrictions slowed migration.
The biggest drop was on the Central Mediterranean route, where arrivals from Tunisia and Libya fell by 59%.
