Meloni backs Albanian migrant centers despite criticism

Dec 15, 2024 - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly defended the newly established migrant reception centers in Shëngjin and Gjadër, Albania, rejecting any possibility of stopping them.

At an event with her party in Atreju, Meloni said that the centers would go ahead as planned. "Even if I have to spend every night there until the end of the Italian government, these centers will operate," she said.

Meloni stressed her commitment to fighting human trafficking, explaining that her government's protocol with Albania serves as a major deterrent for traffickers. "If we stop them, that will be the greatest favor we can do for these criminals," she added.

The Prime Minister also shared the story of Jasmin, a young girl who survived a migrant shipwreck, promising to continue her fight against human traffickers and their criminal networks.
