Kosovo blocks Albanian tangerines as exporters warn of losses

Dec 20, 2024 –A shipment of 9 tons of Albanian tangerines has been held at Kosovo’s border, raising concerns among exporters that delays could lead to significant financial losses.

The Albanian supplier explained that the tangerines had already undergone all required safety checks locally and internationally. However, Kosovo’s Food and Veterinary Agency (AUV) requested additional testing, sending samples abroad for analysis. Results are expected to take 5–7 days.

Exporters say the delays jeopardize the quality of the fruit. “Even if the tangerines meet all standards, the extended wait will cause spoilage, and we will bear the financial burden,” one exporter said.

At Pristina’s terminal, eight additional trucks carrying Albanian tangerines are also being held while awaiting test results.

Tangerine exports are a crucial part of Albania’s agricultural trade, particularly during the winter season. Prolonged delays at the border threaten to disrupt trade flows and impact the livelihoods of farmers and exporters reliant on timely shipments.
