Italy-Albania migrant deal back on course

After months of legal wrangling and a two-month pause, the controversial Italy-Albania migrant deal is back in action. Italian navy patrol vessel Cassiopea is en route to reception centres in Shengjin and Gjader, carrying migrants as part of the revived bilateral agreement.

The operation, aimed at easing the migrant crisis, follows a firm pledge by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who insisted that the Italo-Albanian model would deliver results.

Italian courts had previously blocked the deal, citing issues with the reclassification of safe and unsafe countries for asylum seekers. The legal hurdles even led to migrants being turned back to Italy. However, the European Court of Justice recently ruled in Meloni's favour, allowing the deal to move forward.

Under the agreement, both nations are required to maintain customised lists of safe and unsafe countries for asylum processing. Now, with legal clarity in place, the transfer of migrants has resumed as planned. (TemA)
