Dec 22, 2024 - In Albania, colorectal cancer is on the rise, with cases steadily increasing, even among younger people. Currently, the disease makes up 11% of all cancers in the country, prompting health experts to call for greater awareness and preventative measures.
According to specialists, a poor diet and lack of physical activity are key contributors to the growing number of cases. Dr. Hysni Dede, a gastrohepatologist, explains that people with close family members who have had colorectal cancer are 30% more likely to develop it themselves. Environmental factors such as diet, physical inactivity, and habits like smoking and drinking also play a significant role in the risk of developing the disease.
Nutritionists are advising Albanians on how to lower their risk of colorectal cancer through diet. Arlinda Garuci, a dietitian, suggests eating a balanced diet rich in fiber, whole grains, and fresh produce. She also recommends cutting back on red meat and opting for lean white meats. A diet filled with antioxidants, she says, can also help keep colorectal cancer at bay.
Health professionals are also stressing the importance of regular screenings to detect early signs of the disease. Detecting cancer early is key to improving treatment outcomes and survival rates.
As the holiday season approaches, experts are reminding people to be mindful of their eating habits, especially those at higher risk. A few simple changes in diet and lifestyle could make all the difference when it comes to colorectal cancer prevention.
