May 15, 2024 —The downward trend in birth rates in Albania persists as the country enters 2024. According to recent data released by INSTAT, the first quarter of this year saw 5,056 births, reflecting a notable 6.8% decrease compared to the same period in 2023. This marks the lowest birth rate recorded in at least a decade.
INSTAT's report indicates that every region across the nation has witnessed a decline in births, with the most significant drops observed in Vlorë, Berat, and Gjirokastër.
Meanwhile, although deaths in the first quarter of 2024 have decreased by nearly 5% compared to the previous year, the number still surpasses that of births. Consequently, the natural population increase remains negative, with approximately 500 more deaths than births.
In 2023, Albania recorded a total of 23,600 births, representing the lowest level ever documented.
The ongoing decline in birth rates poses significant implications for Albania's demographic landscape, raising concerns about future population growth and its socioeconomic ramifications.
