Tirana, April 20, 2024-In the aftermath of a turbulent protest staged by one faction of the Democratic Party and the Freedom Party in front of Tirana Municipality, law enforcement in Tirana has apprehended three individuals. The demonstration, held on Friday, was orchestrated to demand the resignation of Tirana's mayor, Erion Veliaj, prompted by the recent arrests of numerous senior officials from Tirana City Hall on charges of corruption and abuse of power.
The protest escalated dramatically as projectiles, including tens of Molotov cocktails, were hurled at the municipality's building, posing a grave threat to the safety of police officers tasked with maintaining order at the scene. Additionally, clashes erupted between law enforcement and several opposition activists during yesterday's gathering, further heightening tensions.
Yesterday's escalation of violence prompted individual condemnations from foreign embassies. The EU, US, UK, and OSCE embassies each released separate statements, unequivocally asserting that no justification exists for resorting to violence during a protest.
