Athens, January 5, 2025 – Archbishop Anastasios Yanulatos of Albania is in critical condition after being transferred to Athens for specialized medical care, according to Greek media reports.
The 95-year-old cleric was flown from Tirana on Friday afternoon and admitted to the “Evangelismos” hospital in Athens. His health worsened on Saturday evening, prompting the medical team, led by Professor Anastasia Kotanidou, to closely monitor his condition.
Anastasios Yanulatos had been hospitalized in Tirana on December 30 due to seasonal illnesses. However, his condition deteriorated in the first days of January, with concerns raised about gastrointestinal bleeding. This led to the decision to transfer him to Greece for more advanced medical treatment.
Before his transfer, the archbishop showed symptoms of a viral infection, which added complications to his already delicate medical history. Initially, he was admitted to a private hospital in Tirana, but due to the severity of his health issues, he was moved to Athens for specialized care.
Archbishop Anastasios Yanulatos is a central figure in Albania’s Orthodox Christian community. His health has drawn significant attention, both in Albania and internationally, due to his long-standing leadership in Albania’s Orthodox Church and his influence in promoting religious unity and social welfare.
