Albania's bird flu outbreak under control, say authorities

Tirana, January 9, 2025 – Albania's Ministry of Agriculture has reassured the public that the recent avian flu outbreaks in the country are under control and being closely monitored. Four outbreaks have been confirmed in Zall-Herr, Nartë, Paskuqan, and the Karavasta Lagoon.

In response, authorities have implemented strict measures to isolate the infected areas and prevent further spread. The National Crisis Center, which includes representatives from various ministries, is actively coordinating efforts to contain the virus.

“Since the first case was confirmed, a national response has been initiated,” said the Ministry. The affected areas are being closely monitored, with 3 km and 10 km safety zones established around the outbreak locations.

Two of the confirmed cases are linked to wild bird species. Last week, 20 wild birds were found dead along the coast near Vlora, and tests confirmed they were infected with the H5N1 strain of avian flu. Following the discovery, the Ministry deployed seven monitoring teams to high-risk zones along Albania’s coastline.

Avian flu is a contagious disease that primarily affects birds but can also spread to humans through direct contact with infected animals. In humans, symptoms typically include fever, cough, and respiratory issues, but can escalate to severe pneumonia or even death in some cases.

Albanian authorities continue to take swift action, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any unusual wildlife deaths to prevent further spread of the disease.
