Albanian health expert reassures public over metapneumovirus amid China

Jan 6, 2025 -  As the spread of human metapneumovirus in China raises global concern, Albanian health expert Eugena Tomini has reassured the public, saying there is no reason to panic. The virus, which has been circulating globally since 2001, is not new, and its symptoms are typical of common respiratory infections.

Speaking to Euronews Albania, Dr. Tomini explained that the virus has been seen before and does not pose an immediate threat. "This is not a new virus," she said. "It has been circulating for many years, and its symptoms are similar to those of the flu and COVID-19. There is no need for panic."

The virus, while potentially causing complications in vulnerable groups such as the very young and elderly, is treatable. Dr. Tomini pointed out that in some cases, metapneumovirus can lead to pneumonia, but these cases are rare and manageable with proper care.

Albania has already seen cases of metapneumovirus in previous years. "We had confirmed cases last year, and our healthcare system is prepared to handle any new cases," Dr. Tomini said. She also noted that while symptoms can overlap with those of other viruses, a laboratory test is needed to confirm a diagnosis.

The outbreak in China has drawn attention from international health organizations, but Dr. Tomini urged calm. "We are in a season when viral infections are common, and people should follow basic health advice, including good hygiene practices and seeking medical help if symptoms worsen."

As the situation continues to develop, experts agree that while metapneumovirus is being closely monitored, there is no immediate cause for concern.
